3-4 Curriculum Overview
At BCS, we teach integrated units in which several topics are presented together, often encompassing several disciplines in one unit. There are logical connections of topics throughout the year. It is such a natural, comprehensive way to learn.
Within each unit, we have planned to integrate technology, to allow student choice and differentiation, to provide for challenge, and to reach the multiple intelligences of various student learning styles.
Our curriculum operates on a two-year cycle, meaning that we do different things from year to year so that students have a new curricular experience in both years on the 3/4 team.
As part of BCS 3/4th grade instructional practices, we implement Universal Design for Learning framework. All students have access to the following:
Audiobooks
Access to digital textbooks
Preferential seating
Assistive technology (access to a word processor, voice typing, spell check)
Multiple ways to demonstrate knowledge
Extended time on assignment
Read aloud offered on assessments that are not assessing reading, organizational tools for writing assignments (graphic organizers)
Visuals/models/examples provided of the final product (for projects, writing assignments, math equations, etc.)
Visual schedules and reminders of changes in the schedule
Parents can get daily curriculum updates by reading this blog to find out what is going on in my classroom. Many student materials will not go home (ie. language arts books, writing binders, and social studies textbooks). If you have any questions, please email me for more information.
